According to tradition begins around 500BC in northern India, a young Hindu monk was punished to say 108 prayers.
It was very likely that he would be confused, so an old teacher thought to pass 108 pips in a rope tying the two
So every time he would pass a pip he would say a prayer without being confused. The Hindus called it MALA which in
their language means prayer. From a coincidence, as we read, it was established as chaplet.
Later Buddhists established it with 108 beads too. Muslims made it with 99 beads and 33 beads as the properties of
their prophet. Catholics made the rosary with 59 beads Hail Mary and Our Father, the Orthodox made the worry beads
with 12 beads as the Holy Apostles, and with 33 beads as the years of Jesus as a human, and with 50-100 or more.
The Orthodox monks of Mount Athos used to make ropes of black wool knit that each knot contains 9 crosses as many
as the Angelic orders. The etymology of kompoloi (κομπολόι) comes of the word knot(=κόμπος) and speech(=λόγος).
Pope Gregory JG established the first Sunday of October as a day of worry beads, because as the tradition says the
Archangel Gabriel taught Saint Pachoumio and Saint Dominic how to make the chaplets. In addition, the Archangel
Gabriel intervened between Allah and the Prophet Muhammad, as the Muslims believe, because they had to pray several
times a day. In the Catholic Church, in 1215, was founded the Dominican Order of Assisi (Brothers preachers). In
the Orthodox faith, worry beads were used by monks and clergymen, folksies didn't use it that much. Now, maybe the
last years, folksies gradually began to use it too.
We, Greeks, occupy our fingers and we love to hear the sound of the beads, that's why we leave the space between.
When we buy worry beads we have to pay attentnion to how it looks, how it sounds and how it feels. The worry beads
are inseparable friend and can calm down the human every time. Both in joy and in sorrow, is relaxing. The worry
beads often reveal our personality, others want it simple and plain unadorned, while others with many ornaments.
The once misunderstood worry beads have now found the place they belong, in the hearts of people. Sometimes they
were misunderstood because they were used by some unintegrateds in society, called blokes. However, bloke actually
is called a man who was responsible for thieves and sinners of pre-revolutionary period and the revolution of 1821.
As we can understand, it was very difficult to supply all of them with clothes, food, guns, swords and even taking
care of the families of the soldiers.
All these above were taken care of the bloke, the caretaker as they call him now. Worry beads are made of numerous
materials such as amber (electron), ivory, frankincense, precious or semi-precious stones, olive wood, ebony,
sandalwood, corals, pearls, animal bones, horns, seeds, various shells, resins, giousouri (black coral) and many
other materials.
